Medicare is a U.S. federal government program that provides health care for people 65 or older, people under 65 with certain disabilities, and people of any age with end-stage renal disease.


In order to join Medicare and receive Part A benefits for free you need to meet all of the following three criteria:

Medicare Coverage Choices

Original Medicare has two parts: part A provides coverage for inpatient hospital stays and skilled nursing services, part B provides coverage for doctor visits and other medical services. Both parts A and B have cost sharing that you are responsible for, such as deductibles, copays and coinsurance. In general, neither part A nor part B provides coverage for prescription drugs, care for eyes, teeth or hearing.

Because the cost sharing of original Medicare program can be substantial, most people get Medicare coverage in either of the two ways: (1) Original Medicare combined with a Part D plan and a Medicare Supplement Plan, or (2) A Medicare Advantage Plan. You must first join original Medicare Parts A and B to qualify for either option.
